A Year in Review

The past year has been tremendously eventful, with us being hit with one thing after another.

This year was crammed full with news in the world of politics. First and foremost, the insurrection at the United States Capitol. January 6th started out with a rally outside of the White House, where then current President Trump, spoke to a crowd of his supporters. After the speech, his supporters moved to the U.S. Capital and proceeded to break into the Halls of Congress, as Congress prepared to certify the 2020 election. This event caused many problems for the President including being, “permanently banned from Twitter,” said Washingtonpost.com. The President was also impeached for a second time during his one term presidency. Other major political news included the inauguration of Joe Biden as the 45th President of the United States, Kamala Harris as the first female vice president, and the complete removal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan.

2021 meant a lot of wins and losses in terms of gaining racial equality. Firstly, the Derek Chauvin trial for the death of George Floyd, ended with Chauvin being found guilty on all charges including, “second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter,” said cnn.com. Despite this win for equality, the year was also plagued with deaths of innocent black men and women. Additionally, in a racially motivated attack, “Eight people, including six Asian women, are shot, and killed at three Atlanta-area spas,” cnn.com.

Throughout the past year there has been a barrage of celebrity news. Firstly, big news in the celebrity world, the split of Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello. The two broke up on November 17th after two years of dating. “I was devastated and heartbroken to find out they broke up,” said sophomore, Silvana Gonzalez Flores. Other major celebrity break up news includes the splitting up of Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, and Jennifer Lopez and Alexander Emmanuel Rodriguez, A-rod for short. For every sad breakup though, there is always an exciting new relationship. Jennifer Lopez, later in the year, rekindled a past relationship with Ben Affleck. Additionally, Kim Kardashian started a new relationship with actor and comedian, Pete Davidson. Also, Spider-Man costars, Zendaya and Tom Holland, made their long rumored relationship official after being seen kissing in July. “I was so excited to hear about their relationship. I’ve been hoping for it to happen since 2017,” said an anonymous student. With relationship news comes wedding news as Ariana Grande tied the knot with then boyfriend, Dalton Gomez. Other major celebrity news included the car crash of Tiger Woods, the eye opening Oprah interview of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, and the tragic death of Betty White.

Musical influence played a large role in the past year. First and foremost, the success of Olivia Rodrigo must be addressed. First, with the success of her single “Driver’s License” and later with her album “Sour”, 2021 was filled with success for Rodrigo. “I’ve had ‘Sour’ on repeat since May,” said an anonymous student. She won countless Apple Music Awards for her album including, “Breakthrough Artist of the Year, Album of the Year for ‘SOUR’, and Song of the Year,” said tulsaworld.com. Next, Adele made a huge comeback with the release of her “30” album after a six year break since her last album. Both Lil Nas X and Taylor Swift released highly anticipated albums in 2021. Swift re-released her albums “Fearless” and “Red,” while Lil Nas X released his first album “Montero.”

Some movies and tv shows helped to entertain throughout the past year. Marvel Studios played a huge role in the entertainment of the past year with major shows like Wandavision, Hawkeye, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, etc. Marvel also released hit films including Spider-Man: No Way Home, Shang-Chi, and Black Widow. It is important to note that Spider-Man: No Way Home became the second highest grossing film in its opening weekend. Other major pieces in film and tv included, Cruel Summer and Only Murders in the Building. Also, the year included countless musicals including, Dear Evan Hansen, West Side Story, and In The Heights, among many others. 

With the affairs of 2021 in the rearview mirror, we look forward to the thrilling possibilities of 2022.
