“Clothes make a statement, costumes tell a story,” said Manson Cooley. Ideal costumes show creativity and showmanship to truly go above and beyond to become a character. Minimal effort in costumes will leave everyone guessing what your character even is.

Costumes that should be avoided are just masks, cat ears, anything racially inappropriate, and lastly overly complicated themes. Some top best costumes from your favorite celebrities are Lupita Nyong’o as Dionne from Clueless, Lady Gaga as Edward Scissorhands, and lastly The Weeknd and Bella Hadid as Beetlejuice and Lydia.  Lupita Nyong’o’s Dionne costume showed extreme detail and showmanship of portraying Dionne in 2008. Lady Gaga when dressed as Edward Scissorhands in 2017 showed a true character and a fan favorite during Halloween. Lastly, The Weeknd and Bella Hadid as Beetlejuice and Lydia were an eye-catcher in 2018, with every detail made perfect .

On the other hand, many celebrities had major letdowns when it came to costumes for Halloween. For example Julianne Hough, Hilary Duff accompanied by Jason Walsh, and Heidi Klum. First, Julianne Hough in 2013 dressed up as Crazy Eyes from the Orange is The New Black she wore inappropriate makeup, making the costume look like black face. “Ignorance is sometimes not bliss; I really had no idea what I was doing, and it was all out of fun and respect for the character … I don’t even know how to talk about it because it’s such a sensitive topic. It makes me so sad to think that I was that dumb. I learned a big lesson,” said Julianne Hough to Allure in 2015. Then, Hilary Duff accompanied by Jason Walsh dressed up as an Indian and a pilgrim in 2016, which had major backlash from fans. Hilary apologized, saying “I am SO sorry to people I offended with my costume. It was not properly thought through and I am truly, from the bottom of my [heart] sorry.” Lastly, Heidi Klum usually has over-the-top extravagant costumes but in 2008 her costume as the goddess Kali got major backlash from the Hindu community as many were offended with the costume’s portrayal of their religion. Many asked Heidi to apologize for her costume, but never received one.

¨Halloween is not only about putting on a costume but it’s about finding the imagination and costume within ourselves,¨ said Elvis Duran. Halloween is a time of excitement and expressing yourself through costumes and creativity, but when picking a costume make sure to pick wisely and  stay away from any controversial and insensitive behavior to any community.
