Climate change: the phenomenon of long-term effects on climate, animals, rainforest, coral reefs, ice caps, clean air, and water, and the future. Humans contribute to climate change every single day.

A significant cause of climate change is greenhouse gases. Greenhouse gases consist of water vapor, CO2, methane, nitrous oxide, and ozone. Humans are responsible for releasing these harmful gasses into the atmosphere by burning fossil fuels, farming, and deforestation. Our society constantly disregards the effects of climate change and continues these harmful behaviors. Climate activist Greta Thunberg stated in an interview with NPR, “We might see some improvements in some areas, but still, the U.S. is expanding fossil fuel infrastructure.” Americans are extremely irresponsible when it comes to preventing climate change.

Americans deny climate change; however, climate change has arguably become political. Pew Research Center asserts, “a majority of Joe Biden’s supporters (68%) described climate change as a very important issue.” Whereas, only 11% of Donald Trump supporters agreed. Democrats statistically care more about climate change, and because of this, politics have a huge influence on climate change. A 2021 Yale study estimated that 72% of adults in America believe in climate change, yet many of those Americans do not take action to prevent it from worsening. Ways you can help the earth by saving electricity, eating more vegetables, and reducing the use of your car. Saving electricity is important because most homes are powered by fossil fuels. Using energy-efficient appliances and LED lights is an easy way to make a difference. Eating significantly more vegetables and reducing meat consumption can help reduce your carbon footprint. Transportation like cars, airplanes, and boats burn large amounts of diesel and fossil fuels. Limiting your travel and carpooling can make a difference. Switching to an electric vehicle can also help the environment greatly.

Climate change is happening, and happening quickly. We are running out of time to save the earth and prevent irreversible damage. Speak up, do your part, and encourage others to do the same.
