In April of this year, Swiftie fans were met with tragedy when it was announced that their favorite couple had broken up: Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn. 

Taylor Swift is known for her tumultuous relationship history, mainly because she talks about them in a lot of her songs. Joe Alwyn is quite the opposite of this and most of his relationships are kept on the down low such as never posting about them, working around questions about her during interviews, and they were hardly ever seen together. This is very difficult for Swift given that she writes about many of her relationships and is very open with her fans. Many people had very high hopes for this relationship given that it lasted for 6 years. Many were heartbroken when finding out the couple split up.

In 2017, they made their relationship public but it’s believed they got together in October 2016. From then on their relationship was pretty private. Every once in a while pictures would be taken of them together. Alwyn tells British Vogue this in 2018. “I’m aware people want to know about that side of things. I think we have been successfully very private, and that has now sunk in for people.” He always talks about how much he values this privacy but if anyone knew anything about being harassed by the public, especially about their relationship, it’s Taylor Swift. 

It is believed that she has moved on to lead singer of the band The 1975, Matty Healy. Earlier this year she showed up as a surprise at one of their concerts and played Anti-Hero from the album Midnight. Many questions the relationship thinking Swift could do better. Camryn Anderson-Romero, a sophomore, says, “I think they are cute, and him at her concert was really cute. But he’s sort of weird.” Healy is known for doing weird things on stage, like pulling his fans on stage and kissing them which is why so many fans are hesitant about how they feel.  

The reason for their breakup is not really known. All that has been said is that they simply “grew apart” and Awlyn couldn’t handle the publicity that came with dating Taylor Swift. The exes planned on continuing being friends but just recently Swift went out with a group of her friends and later that day they had all unfollowed Alwyn. This has led fans to believe that their split was not because they grew apart but because of something much more.
