Residents of Arizona are witnessing the breaking of last year’s record for heat-related deaths with over 500 deaths counting. Last year in 2022, there were 425 heat-related deaths confirmed. Heat-related deaths and illnesses can be avoided.
Lots of heat records were broken this summer. This is the seventh hottest summer for Arizona in 129 years. Even with this being one of the hottest summers there are ways to stay safe and prevent heat-related illnesses and death. Dr Rebecca Sunenshine, Medical Director for the Maricopa County Department, says “Even with extreme heat like how we saw this summer, these deaths are preventable.” To protect yourself from heat illness or even death you should limit outdoor activities to the coolest parts of the day, wear lightweight clothes, and drink water throughout the day. According to foxweather.com “When factoring both the high and low temperatures, the average temperature in July reached 102.74 – making Phoenix the first major city in the U.S. ever to average 100 degrees or more for a month.” Arizona is known for its crazy heat so make sure to stay safe and take care of yourself next summer.
