A national emergency has been called near the Caribbean islands on February 10 after a mystery ship has sprung a leak. It is unclear where the ship came from or where it is going, and emergency workers in Trinidad and Tobago are racing against time to clean up the oil.
“Cleaning and restoration can only begin as soon as we have the situation under control. Right now the situation is not under control,” Prime Minister Kieth Rowley told journalists.
The oil spill affected nearly ten miles of coastline, along with workers and divers on the case reporting they are unable to plug the leak as of now. Rowley has even asked for volunteers to help clean the spill, with the exception of wearing masks for protection.
The residents nearby have also been warned to wear some sort of mask protection or to relocate while the restoration takes place, as oil and other substances have washed upon the shore.
“We don’t know who it belongs to. We have no idea where it came from, and we also don’t know all that it contains.” Rowley said, claiming it might be involved in illicit business.
The word “Gulfstream” was also spotted on its side, Rowley states, the idea of it in the process of being towed a possibility. Luckily, there were no humans on or close to the 330 foot ship when its oil began to drain into the ocean.
