Atlanta rapper Future and St. Louis producer Metro Boomin have teamed up to form a new album, entitled “WE DON’T TRUST YOU.” 

Metro Boomin has been on a serious hot streak in recent years, collaborating with rappers such as 21 Savage, the Migos, Travis Scott, and many others. Metro also produced the tie-in album created for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Future has also made a big name for himself over the past decade, releasing albums like DS2 which has gained a huge fan following. 

I know that there is a certain feature on this album that has garnered a lot of attention on its own, but I promise we’ll get to that part later.

This album isn’t just a tag team only featuring Future and Metro, as other artists like The Weeknd, Travis Scott, Playboi Carti, Rick Ross, and a very angry Kendrick Lamar offer contributions. 

Metro works his magic on this record, with every song having a unique, head-nodding beat behind it. However, if you notice that I’m mostly talking about Metro Boomin and his production, there’s a reason for that. The songs that catch my attention the least are the songs that only feature Future and Metro. While there are some exceptions like the title track, “Claustrophobic”, and “Cinderella”, this album is at its best when there are 2 or 3 rappers on it as well as a good beat.

 The highlights for me on this record are the songs “We Don’t Trust You”, “Young Metro”, “Type S***”, and the song “Like That.” 

That last song features Kendrick Lamar, and the content of his verse has sent the rap world ablaze since the album came out. His verse acts as a response to Drake and J. Cole, specifically their song “First Person Shooter”, in which Cole asks who the greatest modern MC of rap is, Kendrick, Drake, or himself. Kendrick took some offense to this because, on Like That, he says “Mother**** the big three, it’s just big me.” He also takes a shot at Drake for comparing his success to Michael Jackson, with Kendrick pointing out that “Prince outlived Mike Jack.”

On the topic of the album as a whole, I think it’s a very enjoyable collab album featuring 2 titans of the rap industry. Metro and Future bring their talents to the table, and it leaves me excited for what’s coming down the pipe for both artists.
