Kamala Harris has been the vice president of the United States since the election in 2020. Over the summer months, Harris stepped up to run for the presidency in the 2024 election.
On July 21, 2024, President Joe Biden dropped out of the race for the 2024 presidential election. He spoke of health as well as personal reasons that led to his decision. Soon after, Harris stepped up to run in his place. Since doing so she’s had a copious amount of supporters. Barack Obama as well as Biden have been supporting her in the background as she makes her campaign. With the help of those close to her as well as others, she is making quite the stir.
Harris has been known for her part in healthcare reform, social justice, and various other matters. When she accepted to be in the race she expressed her opinions on the need for change throughout America.
Though everyone had different reactions to the news, here are some from Thunderbird. Melissa Zimmerman said the news was “Shocking but not surprising”. While Biden proved that he was capable of running for and winning the election, the decline in his health brought forth questions about his ability to serve another term. Anthony Rivera shared that it was “the best call”. With this year’s election being so contentious he believes it was the right choice. Additionally, it was said that because of Harris’ place in office already, that she was just “one of those ones that made sense”.
Harris shared stories of her life growing up and of her past as a prosecutor at the 2024 Democratic National Convention. In front of all of her supporters, she said, “I will be a president who unites us around our highest aspirations”. She made promises to always fight for the American people, as she has been since she was only a prosecutor.
During the Presidential Debate Harris shared her past experiences of growing up as a middle-class kid. She said that she is “the only person on this stage who has a plan that is about lifting up the middle class and working people of America”. Expressing her beliefs in the dreams and aspirations of the American people she set forth in hopes of touching the hearts of those who live the lives that she referred to.
During an interview with Brian Taff she touched on topics such as small businesses, housing, and even gun violence. All small pieces of what she hopes will become an opportunity economy.
The race for the presidency has left many speechless with its twists. Plenty would even say they’ve never seen anything quite like this but it still leaves many questions unanswered.
