Thunderbird High School’s Key Club will be hosting its annual St. Mary’s canned food drive starting Nov. 4th through Dec. 6th. Students may donate spare canned goods to their homeroom teachers, according to Mr.Vega, the sponsor of Key Club.
Members of Key Club will pass out boxes to collect canned goods to teachers on Nov. 4th, kicking off the canned food drive. This year, students in all grades can donate any non-perishable goods or money to their first hour teachers.
By donating students are raising money and collecting canned food to help those in need. Working with Thunderbird’s Key Club, in the past St. Mary’s Food Bank received over two thousand pounds of food from donations. “The canned food drive’s outcome last year was great, a lot of students donated.” Matthew Neswhat, President of Key Club, said. Last year’s canned food drive was a success! With Thanksgiving and the holiday season approaching many families across the Valley struggle to have a meal to eat. According to St. Mary’s Food Bank, “In Arizona, food insecurity is a problem 2 million Arizonans are faced with every year.” Among those two million Arizonans, Tom and his family lived on a fixed income and struggled to make ends meet. He depended on St. Mary’s Food Bank. “All the people who work here and contribute are just fantastic because there are so many people out there that really need food desperately,” Tom said. With St. Mary’s help Tom and his family now have access to a hot meal. More than ever, St. Mary needs donations to keep supporting and feeding Arizona’s families.
According to St. Mary’s food bank “The most needed items are: peanut butter, canned fruit, canned soup, canned protein, canned vegetables, rice and beans, cereal, and pasta.” These help keep families full for longer.
The deadline to bring in your donations is Dec. 6th. Members of Key Club are going to be collecting donations and tallying up the results. The Homeroom class who collects the most donations, whether that be cash or canned foods, wins! The prize is a donut party, courtesy of Thunderbird high school’s Key Club!
