A very popular controversial movie topic that happens during Christmas is whether or not The Nightmare Before Christmas is a Christmas Movie or a Halloween movie.
The Nightmare Before Christmas is a movie made in 1993 by Tim Burton, and the reason this is a controversial topic is because the movie starts in Halloween Town. Jack Skellington, the protagonist, who is considered the Pumpkin King, starts to wonder why they do the same thing over and over again and goes on a walk in the graveyard, bored with Halloween.
Although some people say it’s a Halloween movie for that reason, others say it’s a Christmas movie due to Jack wanting to steal Christmas and changing the entire theme of Halloween Town to match Christmas Town.
Controversy over The Nightmare Before Christmas spreads to students and teachers alike. Jamie Bauer-Spano, theatre teacher, believes it is a Halloween movie. When asked why she answered, “I feel it gives off the essence of the spooktacular spirit of Halloween.” She believes the main plot of this movie is based in Halloween Town. Roselynn Armstrong, a freshman here, also believes it’s a Halloween movie. I think it’s more of a Halloween movie because it’s more a thriller-like story instead of a happy and jolly story like most Christmas movies,” Armstrong said. She also said the movie has “scary” decorations.
Others believe that The Nightmare Before Christmas is a Christmas Movie; Jonah Nebel, freshman, when asked why he thinks it’s a Christmas movie, said, “I believe it’s a Christmas movie because of the title having the word Christmas; it’s literally The Nightmare Before Christmas, so it has to be a Christmas movie.” This does make sense, but Kime Anderson, math teacher, said, “It’s a Christmas movie. The whole movie is based on Jack Skellington trying to become “Santy Claus. Also, the opening scene is after Halloween.” While this is true, some say it’s still a Halloween movie.
