More than a year after the war started, Israel and Hamas have finally agreed to a ceasefire. This deal, which has been in the works since May 2024, has already been subject to controversy. With the Trump administration’s arrival, the credit for the ban’s implementation is split. Biden has stated that the deal was completed under the “precise contours” of a deal proposed earlier last year, according to the BBC. Trump, however, has said on Truth Social that this ceasefire’s implementation “could have only happened as a result of our Historic Victory in November.”
The deal consists of three stages, which will be carried out over the next three months. The stages will see a withdrawal of Israeli troops, an exchange of hostages and prisoners, and the allowance of aid to reach the impoverished and starving population of Gaza. The deal also mentions possible post-war reconstruction in Gaza.
