With the massive success of the Nintendo Switch boasting the title of ‘third most best-selling console of all time’, Nintendo finally announced its successor under the name “Nintendo Switch 2.”
Nintendo’s trailer showcases the Switch 2 serving as an upgrade to the former dominating console. They advertise the Switch 2 as having a significantly bigger size than its predecessor, along with a kickstand that allows the console to stand at any angle desired. Avid in the gaming scene, English teacher Anthony Rivera expressed relief with the size change, noting that it gives ease for “those with bigger hands” while holding the undocked console.
Unlike the previous Switch, the joycons click into the main console without needing to slide them in. The decision to attach the joycons in this manner is likely a result of the recurring issues the original Switch had initially. From the joycons not registering to the rails coming loose, the issues caused by the original slide-in system were even addressed on the official Nintendo support site. Hopefully, the new system fixes those issues.
For those worried about an absence of cross-platform play, Nintendo’s website states, “You can play Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive games, as well as Nintendo Switch games, on Nintendo Switch 2.”
While the trailer did not detail the specifications of the console, the gameplay demonstration of the upcoming Mario Kart 9 on the Nintendo Switch 2 seems to confirm it will contain a stronger graphics processor. “We did get a glimpse at a new Mario Kart game – likely the next main entry in the legendary series – which looked rather slick and polished, so we can posit that there’s a good dose of power under the Nintendo Switch 2’s hood” said techradar.com.
Nintendo’s announcement gained huge traction, receiving roughly 19 million views. The console is expected to release later this year, and fans can only wait for the eventual debut.
