Thunderbird’s Esports team started its season last week. They already have a win against Mountainside which brought their record to 2-2.
Esports is short for electronic sports, a form of competitive gaming. In recent years, an increasing number of people have become interested in interscholastic Esports, and many schools have become curious. Over 100 schools joined U.S Esports in the past year. Thunderbird’s competitive game is SuperSmash Bros.
The team comprises Captain Josef Gavagan, Gabriel Demesa, Caesar Antonio, Lyn (Jalil) Dubose, and Evan Escoto. Lyn Dubose, senior, said the season starting is a wonderful thing” and she’s happy “that we are doing it again. Last year we got so close, but yet so far,” she added, referring to their semifinal loss. Gabriel Demesa, senior, expressed concern at the level of competition due to the rise in participating schools. “I just feel a little nervous as we are playing against people who are good at the game,” he said. Both players are happy that the season has started again.
