Multiple wildfires burn in the Carolinas right now. Eighty-one fires are burning, but most of them are contained. More than 200,000 residents have been evacuated due to the fires.
It is believed that backyard burning, the burning of household trash by residents on their own property, is what started the fires, and the super dry weather with low humidity due to lack of rain helped the fires start. The largest wildfire has spread over 2,000 acres. Residents of several neighborhoods in the Carolina Forest were told to evacuate after the fire broke out, and South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster declared a state of emergency.
According to ABC News, firefighters have made significant progress in fighting the fires, with about 44 percent of the blaze contained, according to the South Carolina Forestry Commission. Planes and black hawk helicopters have been seen dumping water onto the fire. Ground crews have been seen using tractors to dig a perimeter around the fire to help contain it. No structures have succumbed to the blaze, and no injuries have been reported as of Mar. 2, officials said. There has been a warning about high winds, low humidity, and relentless drought conditions that could quickly spread wildfires throughout the central United States, including states such as Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and Kansas, according to USA Today.
