There is a new installment to the Shrek franchise. The loveable ogre, Shrek, has his fifth film coming out.

Shrek 5 comes out Dec. 23, 2026, and Shrek fans are not happy about it. The cast-announcement trailer starring Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz, and Zendaya reveals how the characters will look, and it is not the same animation as it was in the Shrek 4 film.

Fans are comparing this change to Sonic the Hedgehog because in the first trailer that was released, Sonic’s design was a “night terror,” according to radiotimes.com, and fans were not having it. The directors for the Sonic movie did end up changing the animation of the Sonic movie to fit better with fans’ expectations. Shrek fans wonder if the directors for Shrek are able to do the same for Shrek 5.

Fans are also wondering what Shrek 5’s plot could be since Shrek 4 ended the storyline. Evelin Hernandez Mendez, freshman, said, “I feel like it’s very unnecessary,” referring to the making of another Shrek movie. Shrek 5 has many fans both excited and nervous for the outcome of the movie. We can only wait till 2026 to figure how it will play out.
