On Monday evening, Sen. Cory Booker of New Jersey took the Senate floor with the intent to indicate everything wrong with the actions of President Donald J. Trump throughout his presidency so far. Booker sought to speak for as long as he was physically able to. This meant that throughout his over 25 hours on the Senate floor, he was given no time to use the restroom, eat, or sit down.
This event was a milestone for all parties involved. Booker took the record for longest speech given on the Senate floor, a record previously held by Sen. Strom Thurmond of South Carolina in an attempt to block the advancement of the Civil Rights Act of 1957, according to AP News.
However, many have begun to question the efficacy of the speech. Shari Schmidt, a government teacher at this school stated that she believes the speech was more performative than anything. She said that the speech could have been better served as a filibuster, a long speech given in order to prevent or delay a decision on legislation, in an attempt to block a bill.
It is not entirely clear what the speech will affect throughout the government if anything; however, Sen. Booker’s speech is a great display of courage and dedication which, is great to see from a politician.
