Warning: spoilers ahead
Netflix confirmed a third season of Squid Game is in the works, set to release on June 27. Here’s what viewers know so far.
Squid Game has caused speculation on the last three games, with the first of them being, “Dong, Dong, Dongdaemun,” which was teased in the end credits of season two. Viewers saw two dolls: Young-hee, the doll from the first episode, and her companion, Cheol-Su, staring at the players. “Dong, Dong, Dongdaemun” appears similar to London Bridge, a children’s game where players run under two people, in this case, the dolls, acting like a bridge. As players pretend to collapse, they drop their arms, trapping the people between them. During the game, the two dolls will sing a song, much like “Mingle” from season two. And as we all know, if Young-hee and her companion Cheol-Su catch the players, they will be shot and killed by the pink guards.
In season three, viewers saw pictures of games on the walls behind the beds, including two pictures depicting human chess and monkey bars. Likewise, season three displays pictures of little stick figures hanging on a bar, with some figures falling. Another depicts a checkerboard with stick figures standing on the board like chess pieces. People speculate that these pictures foreshadow the upcoming games.
In a survey at this school asking students if they plan on watching season three, 56 percent said yes, expressing interest in what may happen in the final three games. Lyn Dubose, senior, said, “Aside from the main contestant we have followed like Gi-Hun’s group, I believe that the remaining players who voted to continue the games will probably die in the first episode of season 3.”
Fans are skeptical about Thanos returning to the show. Thanos is a popular character among the fans, and many hope he returns. “Hopefully Thanos, player 230, will come back and the players will be released,” said Jasmine Van Leuven, freshman.
Players are motivated by the money offered in the games. The prize pool of 45.6 billion won contributes to players in the show voting yes to continue the games, with the end goal of paying off the high debts that got them there initially. Isabella Velasquez, freshman, predicts that “the players are going to want to win for the money, but want to stop coming back and be a part of the games. In season 3, maybe all the players will join an alliance and decide to leave, but one player will betray them and take all the money. They will all turn against player 456.”
As most fans believe, player 456, Gi-Hun, will die in the end due to the rebellion he caused and lose everything. However, some assume he won’t, as he is the main character, while others suspect he will become the new frontman, the next man to don the black mask.
