Steve Lacy has returned to the studio with a new release, shaking up expectations and moving past the melodies that once defined tracks like “Dark Red.”
Lacy is a beloved artist who’s known for melodically blending R&B, funk, and indie rock. Lacy first rose
to fame as the guitarist for the acclaimed band The Internet. He began producing music as a high schooler using GarageBand. In 2022, he released the Grammy-winning album Gemini Rights, which immensely sparked fan interest.
On Aug. 15, the artist dropped a new single titled “Nice Shoes” as a trailer for his upcoming album, Oh Yeah? The song left fans feeling surprised by his new music style. While Lacy is known for smooth elements, this new release was an experiment with harsher sounds and rhythms. “It’s not what I expected from him, but that’s why I love it,” said Mia Schuur, junior, when asked about Lacy’s new release.
Though a tracklist hasn’t been confirmed, Lacy mentioned that it will be far different from tracks like “Gemini Rights” and “The Lo-fis.” These new songs will have a style that fans haven’t heard before. In an interview with Pitchfork, Lacy expressed that his album is so unique, he feels like he’s creating his own language. An official release date for the album has yet to be announced, but fans can expect it sometime this year.
