Grammys Recap

The 65th Grammys, hosted in the Crypto.com Arena was a historical and memorable night. This contained the traditional Grammys ceremony that featured performances and awards from artists throughout the music industry.

The winners are as follows: Lizzo, Record of the Year with “About Damn Time,” Harry Styles, who took home the Album of the Year with Harry’s House, and Song of the Year went to Bonnie Ratt with “Just Like That.” The last for the general awards was Samara Joy, who won Best New Artist. Some more notable winners were: Beyonce who took home 4 Grammys, winning Best Dance/Electronic Music Album, Best Dance/ Electronic Recording, Best Traditional R&B Performance, and Best R&B Song. Kendrick Lamar won Best Rap Performance, Best Rap Song with “The Heart Part 5”, and Best Rap Album with Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers. New and upcoming Artist Steve Lacy, won Best Progressive R&B album with Gemini Rights. It truly was a historic night, as Beyonce became the most decorated artist in history beating the late, George Sulti. Along with Kim Petras, the first transgender woman to win a Grammy for Best Hip-Hop duo.

This year’s performers featured Harry Styles, Mary J Blige, Bad Bunny, Steve Lacy, Stevie Wonder, and DJ Khaled. Some of the more popular, and talked about were Steve Lacy’s where he performed his top charting song, “Bad Habit,” along with DJ Khaled, who performed alongside Jay-Z, Lil Wayne, Rick Ross, and John Legend. There was also a tribute to 50 years of Hip Hop. This tribute paid respect to all those who had contributed to the art. Finally, the Grammy’s also featured a tribute to all artists we have lost this year. Amongst these, was Quavo of the Migos. Quavo paid homage to his deceased nephew, and bandmate Takeoff, by performing a song he had written for him “WITHOUT YOU.The most depressing part of this tribute was the empty chair, beside Quavo, along with Takeoff’s chain and a microphone.

This Grammys was also ripe with controversy. First, many felt Beyonce was snubbed from Album Of the Year, an award she had been nominated for four times, yet failed to win, losing to Harry Styles’ Harry’s House. Next, Harry Styles received quite a lot of backlash after saying “People like me” don’t usually win Grammys in his acceptance speech for Album of the Year. Being a straight white man, many felt that he was over-represented, rather than under-represented, with Twitter user @Jazz_inmypants writing “Harry Styles said this doesn’t happen to people like me very often and I gotta be honest, I can’t think of a type of people this happens for more.” From records being broken to Twitter being in a frenzy by a mere sentence, this Grammy’s had it, except for Kanye West storming the stage of course.

This year’s ceremony gave us many great moments, and hopefully, next year’s Grammys will give us plenty more.
