So-called “Queen of Rap” Nicki Minaj recently appeared at AmericaFest 2025, the annual convention of right-wing organization Turning Point, sparking much discourse among fans.
Minaj has long inspired and supported the queer community. Many feel betrayed by her appearance at the rally: “It’s like, after her supporting us for so long, why the switchup? It feels so random. Also, we make up like a large part of her fan base,” stated Morigan Broniarczyk, sophomore.
Why do fans consider this a switch-up? “I would encourage my gay fans to be fighters, and to be brave… I’m supporting you guys, I love you very, very much,” Minaj said to MTV in 2010. Now, however, Minaj is a different person. “Boys, be boys. It’s okay: be boys. There’s nothing wrong with being a boy,” she stated while referencing transgender people at AmericaFest.
“Critics say her comments went beyond personal testimony, echoing political grievance rhetoric commonly associated with conservative culture-war discourse,” stated CBS News. Plainly stated, Minaj has betrayed the public image she spent years building for the approval of right-wing influencers.
Some fans were annoyed that others were shocked about the rapper’s actions, as Minaj has been in many other controversies before. “I feel like—after everything else with her weird husband—[that] should’ve already been enough for her to face this much backlash,” said Lane Hawley, sophomore.
Her husband, Kenneth Petty, is a registered sex offender in New York due to a 1995 conviction of attempted rape of a 16-year-old girl. He served four years in New York state prison after pleading guilty.
Petty served another seven years in prison after being charged with second-degree murder. “Lamont Robinson was doing his thing on a Queens, New York corner when Petty rolled up, got out of the car, and shot him in the stomach three times,” according to TMZ. Petty took a plea for first-degree manslaughter in the end.
Despite all of her husband’s charges, Minaj continues to support and love Petty. “Although she doesn’t address his ‘checkered past,’ Minaj tells Vogue that Petty’s indifference to ‘the hard, dazzling shell’ of her dame drew her to him when they reunited,” according to Entertainment Tonight.
Since 2017, Minaj has also been in a long-standing, highly publicized feud with fellow rapper Cardi B. The rappers have been going back and forth on Twitter for a while, the situation escalating when Minaj insulted Cardi B’s daughter, Kulture. On Sept. 30, 2025, Minaj tweeted, “Kulture vulture you ugly too.”
After the shade thrown at the seven-year-old, many considered the feud to have gone too far on Nicki’s side. “I genuinely don’t understand why she would throw shade at Kulture; like, what did a child do to you?” said Broniarczyk.
“Really, I just don’t get why we still tolerate her as a person. I think her actions have kinda shown what she cares about. Her music doesn’t excuse her actions,” said Hawley. After all of these controversies, Minaj has lost about 10 million followers and deleted her Instagram account.
Holding celebrities accountable for their actions should be more common; too often, their behavior is ignored for the sake of good music. However, Minaj is just one of many who should face consequences for her choices and behavior.
