Of the many tamed animals in this world, dogs won the Thunderbird survey as the best pet with 40 percent of votes, 15 percent more than the second most voted pet, cats.
Students and teachers stated that dogs were the best for many reasons, including that they are loyal, not stubborn, and incredibly affectionate towards their owners. Tiffany Burkett Crist, school psychologist, commented that dogs can be “so intuitive, playful, and loving. In the past, mine saved my life by waking me up when I was nodding off on the freeway! She was also the best judge of people’s character.”
Dogs play an important role in relationships too. Sophomore Ace Kaleva-Shaw said, “Because my dogs are my best friends. They’re always there when I call them.” Most respondents claim their relationship with their dog goes beyond pet-owner and into friend-family territory.
Coming in second place with 25 percent of votes, cats were described as low maintenance, friendly, and compatible with most living spaces. Freshman Gracie Pye, owner of two cats and four dogs, said her cats are more laid back and relaxed, much less chaotic than her dogs.
Many other animals received votes; however, none nearly as many as dogs or cats. Lizard and hyrax tied for third place with two votes each. Other animals receiving a vote include raccoons, pigs, otters, and skunks.
According to The Challenge’s final survey of the year, the “Best Pet” is dogs. Opinions were based on personal preference, living environment, and many other factors. Sounds like it’s time for you to go get that pet you would like to take care of!
Final Results:
