The Phoenix City Council approved a new trash fee increase on April 22 in an 8-1 vote, which means people in Phoenix will start paying more each month over the next few years.
Starting in July 2026, the monthly cost will go up by $5 to $42.32. It will increase by another $5 in 2027 and by an additional $4 in 2028. After that, the price could keep increasing each year based on inflation, but it won’t go up more than 5% per year. The city says they need this extra money because costs are rising and they want to continue providing and improving services.
According to the City of Phoenix, the Public Works Department changed its original plan based on community feedback, and the total increase was reduced from $17 to $14 over the next three years. The city is also adding more support programs, including increasing funding for Project Assist and offering bigger discounts for people who use smaller trash bins through the Save As You Reduce & Recycle (SAY R&R) program.
City officials say they’re trying to balance raising prices while still helping residents save money.

I liked how you used evidence and explained what the city is doing for the issue!
