Black History Month

Black History Month

Jaden Gonzales, Staff Writer

Black History Month is from February 1st through March 1st when black history is recognized and honored. Throughout Black History Month, black history and all of the events and movements toward freedom and equality for African Americans are appreciated and taught to many people.

One person who strived for equality was Martin Luther King, and he had many important speeches and movements with one of his most famous quotes being, “Darkness can not drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.” MLK did so much for equality and what he did will never be forgotten as we appreciate every February for his unselfishness and courage. In an article by Tonya Jones-Dandridge from Vericast she stated, “It’s an opportunity to spotlight and celebrate the achievements that African Americans have accomplished in this country, despite the history of racism and oppression.” Just emphasizing the importance of recognizing black history as it was and still is an issue in the world as we continue to push for equality for everyone.  In an article by, Frederick Waithe, Executive Director, of Pricing at Vericast, he stated, “Black History Month is that time for African Americans to acknowledge key figures from our past and present. It’s an opportunity to spotlight and celebrate African Americans’ achievements in this country, despite the history of racism and oppression.”

Everything isn’t perfect yet but the push for equality has come a long way and it is hoped to one day reach perfection within equality.
