The Orange Crush marching band has had an incredible season, despite the challenges it has faced along the way.
Just a couple of years ago, the band had a sudden change in leadership, leading to the loss of many students, including more than just seniors.
The band had placed tenth at the marching band championships, according to Andrew Torbert, band director, and fifth this year. This most recent season, the band secured two second-place wins, as well as one visual caption. The group had a never-ending improvement in their performances, with their score increasing by an average of three points per competition. There has been a lot of improvement since the beginning of the year,” said Vinni Storer, senior.
These achievements are a product of teamwork. In an obvious way, the band works together to create music and put on a show, but the upperclassmen help underclassmen learn the music and march. Grace Childers, baton captain, describes the band as “One big family.”
While the members of the band work hard, the parents do as well; without them, the band would not be able to thrive. Parents help with everything from braiding hair to making sure every kid is fed. Without the support of the band parents, it would be difficult for the band to thrive as easily as it does.
The group’s hard work was acknowledged with receiving the achievement above all group award from the governing board, and can be seen in their scores in the competition. Another part of their success is never expecting to be the best, but simply better than before. As Torbet said, he hopes the band will “grow and continue to improve”.
The Orange Crush Marching Band will hopefully grow greater and stronger for next year’s season.
