Energy drinks are a great beverage to help you get through the day, but is it safe to drink underaged?
Energy drinks are beverages designed to boost your energy. The ingredients in energy drinks include sugar, green tea extract, vitamin B, and green coffee extract, but the main ingredient is caffeine, according to EatingWell.
Drinking energy drinks feels like a sugar rush when you eat or drink too much sugar. Drinking too many energy drinks, such as Monster, Celsius, or Red Bull, may make you feel like you have energy, but really, you’re placing ingredients into your body. The amount of caffeine found in energy drinks is between 60mg and 300mg, but the average amount found is around 160mg. Not only is it very unhealthy, but drinking too much of it can cause dangers to your body.
Considering these energy drinks are quite popular, especially among teens, the risks that energy drinks cause can also take a long time to recover from. Drinking more energy drinks will only make you feel even more tired by the time your energy runs out. It builds up the low energy as you keep drinking. Due to the high caffeine, it causes people to have panic attacks, anxiety, or even jitters. Drinking too much caffeine mixed with sugar can also cause you to have a lack of sleep, according to The Hidden Health Risks of Energy Drinks.
Genesis Neyoy, a freshman, claims that energy drinks should not be consumed under the age of 18. Neyoy argues that teens should not be easily influenced. She argues teens should not drink energy drinks, considering they have high levels of caffeine and can harm their bodies. Neyoy claims that her favorite energy drinks that she thinks are safe to drink are the brand Celsius. ¨ Celsius has good benefits rather than the other energy drinks that are filled with disgusting ingredients. ¨ said Neyoy. .Drinking one energy drink once in a while is perfectly okay, but drinking one every single day should not be accepted whatsoever,” said Neyoy. Neyoy does say that her body gets shaky when she drinks a Celsius and has gotten pain throughout her chest and in her arms, but she has never experienced her throat closing up or her anxiety increasing.
When you are feeling low and need a beverage to lift you, choose wisely which brand you drink. Always read the back of the can and avoid beverages with unnecessary, high ingredients you are aware of.
