The NJROTC was given the opportunity to go on a class campout from Feb. 13 to 14.
Students learned to set up tents, went on a nighttime hike, played a competitive game of capture the flag, and participated in many other activities, according to Commanding Officer Heather Shepherd, senior.
“ROTC is cadet-run, cadet-led,” said Commander Erich Schmidt, Senior Naval Science Instructor, meaning that the cadets are in charge of teaching and running the club, which is also a class. The NJROTC helps build important leadership and communication skills that other classes lack, according to Abraham Nibbe, First Lieutenant and Commander of the Armed Drill Team.
Throughout the year, NJROTC students experience many different activities. “We go to Universal; I think it’s $50 for that. We got Leadership Academy as well,” Nibbe said.
Nibbe also mentions that it’s not difficult to join: “Joining ROTC is pretty easy; you just gotta go up to your instructors and find out more about it, or it’s as simple as signing up for it when your counselors come up to you. They’ll ask you, ‘What classes do you want next year?’ and you can just put NJROTC on there.”
